I want to try this VPN method. What kind of router is needed for this VPN. I saw Cisco made a lot of VPN routers. One VPN router is selling for $89 including one year of VPN service. I will test it. If it works, TV Pad is not a paperweight anymore but just need to spend extra to get it to work. A VPN is still valuable if you want to hide your identity. A lot of people had been downloading software, songs, and movies such as Microsoft Office and Photoshop. The government can catch you even there are too many. Every college student download stuffs from the Internet. VPN would make it impossible for the government to track you down because you can disguise to be in another country. Therefore, i am glad to spend this money if I can watch TVB and CCTV on the TV Pad. I will let you know the results.

If you have a TV pad 4 then there is no need to invest in a new router. Install the opevpn app on the box, get a free vpn relay server as listed in [www.vpngate.net] or from a paid vpn service. Follow Lbe's super duper guide to set the box up and you will be back in business.

    I did.

The easist way to enjoy TVPAD4. No DNS change. No extra router needed.

1)Download ZenMate VPN client for Android
    [apkdler.com]

2)Download new banna installer for TVPAD
    [www.speedyshare.com]

3)Dump both files to root of your USB and insert to back of your TVPAD and install it.

4)Open zenmate and sign up for 7 days trial. Select Hong Kong Sever and connect.(May need USB mouse to click connect button)

No need to reboot. Then enjoy full TVPAD function for next 7 days. all apps works!

Does the free vpngate works with streaming videos? Usually free VPN are slow.

Finally, installed the VPN in TVPAD 4 using it own file manager. Then point the VPN to Canada.... it works !

vpngate is fast as some of them are 100+Mbps which is faster than needed for streaming videos as you should find a VPN that's the same or faster than your internet connections native speed since VPN has overhead so it will not be 100% of the speed.

Hi XChemical, what brand and model of router are you using PureVPN with?
I have Linksys and Belkin router that I can flash DD-WRT but couldn't get PureVPN to work on them.
I was able to use PureVPN on my iPad and MacBook Air.

    Any help is appreciate.

    Thanks

I am using openvpn, however every time when I disconnect and then connect again. It seems messing up my pad ethernet connection
The pad unable to connect to my LAN, that means I have to redo the whole setup again
Unplug and replug the eth cable does not help
Is there a way to fix it?

Thanks Tomato123. I will try the Zenmate VPN.

I found out that only USA is blocked for TV Pad. You cannot watch TVB and CCTV in USA. It must be the lawsuit in US that stop TV Pad broadcast. You can take it to Canada and it is still working. Someone in Tijunna, Mexico is working 100%. I guest you can use a VPN from Mexico and still able to watch everything like before.

Okay, for people that wants to go with the VPN. You have 3 options. I only have a tvpad4, and using PureVPN so can't help with other versions.

    1. use VPN software like OpenVPN, VPNgate, PureVPN, etc. Install app on tvpad and setup the software there. Read other forum on how to load non-app store apps.

    2. use existing Router, yes, you don't need a second router. Basically made your whole home network on VPN.

    3. use a second router and dedicated TVPad on that 2nd router. Separating regular home network and VPN network.

the way to setup vpn is very simple. You DON'T need to flash any firmware on router and DON'T need a VPN router. a regular router that allows PPTP is fine.

On the Internet (WAN) section of your router, set your connection type to PPTP. enter the VPN server IP address, username, and password. and that's it. You're done. all your devices are now on VPN. you can check by going to google website. it will automatically switch to the country's google search engine.

the way to setup the 2 router approach is the same way. except you have to wire the 2nd router.
on 2nd router, plug the WAN port into any of your regular router LAN port. make sure your regular router is giving out IP address (DHCP mode).

And that's it. you can use the 2nd router wifi and connect the tvpad through that, or plug into any of the 2nd router LAN ports. You can even have other computers using the 2nd router LAN port and access country restricted websites. i.e. mytv.tvb.com (which only allows Hong Kong user access)

what's the IP address network for the 2nd router? As long as it's NOT the same as the first router, anything is fine. Routers does not like the WAN and LAN to be in the same subnet.

i.e. my 1st router IP is 192.168.2.X my 2nd router IP is 192.168.3.X.

If you don't understand any of these acronyms or how to setup a network, then good luck. You need more help than this forum can provide. Learn the basic network setup first before attempt fixing your tvpad.

I go with the 2nd router is because I don't really know how the tvpad will react to having a vpn app install on the tvpad, but someone say that if you cold reboot it the wifi or the Ethernet get a little bit buggy and you have to factory restore the tvpad. The pain would be you have to put the apps back in every time.
