Thanks Padman! For the time being, using the above alternative, I have set up my unused Galaxy Note 1 as a set-top box for my parents to keep them entertained.

Get a Google Chromecast as well and then have it play to TV.

NO, but need to get Apple TV. The old $70 version will work.

Yes, you just need the Chromecast app as vChannel supports Chromecast. You can basically display anything that is on your iPhone, iPad or computers screen...

Apple TV is not needed for vChannels + Chromecast as Google has a Chromecast app for the iPhone/iPad and it can basically mirror anything on the screen as well.

OT: I thought the iOS version of chromecast app can't do screen mirroring like the Android version. Or does Apple allow it now?

Just in case others are unsure, I can confirm that vChannels + Chromecast works like you say. No need for Apple TV. vChannels app supports casting.

Not sure about that one as I don't have a iOS device. But this is what it says here on the iOS vchannel app:

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vchannel/id799197193?mt=8

    What's New in Version 1.8
    Added Chromecast support
    Added clear history feature
    Fixed issues

Basically, it is saying that since v1.8 of vChannel on iOS, it has support for the Google Chromecast. Screen mirroring is different as screen mirroring basically mirrors everything from the source device to the display output of the Chromecast for everything even if the app doesn't have Chromecast support but if the app supports chromecast then it doesn't need the mirroring support.
