    Sorry to hear of your ongoing TVpad woes; couple troubleshooting tips that may or may not help but the good news it will at least help one to isolate where the failure point might be occuring in the actual reverse troubleshooting process; I also find it helpful to document ones steps along the way; so that if one inadvertently finds or discovers a way to make it work for oneself it can easily be duplicated reliably and repeatably; this is how I normally discover things when I am on the verge of giving up myself; i.e. TVpad woes in particular;

    now its important to note that after one enters a prospective China based DNS address; it should be ideally from the 100% stability/reliability tier if at all possible; fortunately there are six of them so no worries there;

    101.251.252.252 Beijing 27/11 100%
    106.39.38.250 Beijing 27/11 100%
    118.102.25.66 Langfang dnsmasq265 27/11 100%
    61.185.50.66 Xian dnsmasq255 27/11 100%
    183.230.118.135 dnsmasq2.66 27/11 100%
    111.47.80.66 27/11 100%

    now after entering the four separate component numbers that make up the actual China based DNS address; one then simply uses ones remote to hit ok; at that after a moment or two pause; it should accept and respond with an Ok prompt after about five seconds or so;

    at that point one simply unplugs one TVpad device and waits 10 seconds or so to allow the TVpad device to completely reset itself electrically; one then simply replugs TVpad device waiting for it to boot up to the TVpad menu screen;

    one then uses the remote to select the gear cog icon; next go into the LAN network configuration to actually check the recently changed newly input China based DNS address; double check that the four separate component numbers that make up the actual China based DNS address are confirmed and verified as still correct; also don't bother checking functionality via network test as it will probably likely report that it is abnormal yet still wind up working; at least it was for me anyway in my experience(unusual but true real life observed discovered reported fact);

    then next simply use the back button on the remote to back out all the way to the main menu; one can then next simply check for functionality by accessing live TVB broadcast programming; now I usually go to TVB-2 for functionality and testing purposes;

    now after TVB content starts being initially loaded one should see download bandwidth meter become active as it attempts to load the selected programming content; now if ones broadband connection is limited this may take awhile(I fortunately have 180Mbps internet bandwidth); after an interminable delay ones selected live TVB broadcast programming; now your mileage may vary naturally of course or not but this has been my experience anyway;

    now I initially nearly gave up myself when I went thru quite a number of the DNS addresses in bulk quantities and I also initially ran the LAN test and was very dismayed they were reporting abnormal; then I after I was somewhat physically exhausted from the round robin session of entering, testing and trialing the input of the DNS addresses; I said heck why not do something different since I was getting nowhere anyway with nothing to lose at this point;

    now low and behold when I tested for TVB functionality and testing purposes I did not expect it to work and did the test primarily to give myself a much needed break from the marathon session of the bulk inputting of DNS addresses; I was drinking my coffee(expecting to see nothing but a spinning whirling busy indicator and nothing else afterwards to visually entertain me and keep me company);

    when I all of a sudden I notice that the TVB content starts being initially loaded somehow; next I also subsequently see the download bandwidth meter become active and actually register numbers as it attempts to load the selected programming content; holy cow I nearly spilled the coffee on myself and had the coffee go down the wrong windpipe directly down to my lungs; as I coughed and half sputtered up half swallowed coffee and half inadvertently inhaled coffee gone down the windpipe;

    I was both literally amazed and entirely flabbergasted indeed at this accidental serendipitous inadvertent discovery; now I did this only to initially amuse and entertain myself while giving myself a coffee break and much needed break; not even remotely anticipating and/or expecting anything but a spinning whirling busy indicator to entertain me and keep me company during my solitary depressing coffee break; now what an amazing shock and pleasant surprise my coffee break turned out to be after all;

    but like I said your mileage may vary(no promises of course); the key thing and point here is don't give up; as one may be closer than one actually thinks; I find its extremely helpful to keep ones good humor and wits about them when doing this sort of reverse troubleshooting style that I often employ and deploy to further investigate, trial and experiment with TVpad woes as I have typically and routinely have described above; however luckily in my case my unrelenting patience, my undying disciplined hard driving reverse troubleshooting techniques, my own stubborn hard headedness persistence did pay off big time; on that thought and note I wish all members as much luck as I have been fortunate enough to have been granted to allow my TVpad device to become fully 100% operational on a live "TVB" and "CCTV" broadcast tv programming basis; no "vod" or "playback" capabilities though; but as I understand I have now restored the equivalent of being able to view "TVB" and "CCTV" IPTV broadcast tv programming; and I am very happy and satisfied with that in actually having that basic capability restored once again to my TVpad 3rd generation device once again.

    Subject: Getting vpn to work, very close.
    HI Padman:
    I am able to get on vpn by changing the network connection in control panel. It works with my testing laptop plugged to router1 only, but it DOES NOT WORK when it is plug into router2. If you look at the screenshot below, when my testing laptop is plugged into router1, I am able to get a Hong Kong/Singapore ipaddress rather than united states.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/s4235dl7tlyj4co/IMG_20151128_221115.jpg?dl=0

    The configuration is as follows
    Router1 (primarily router)
    wan: dhcp
    lan: ipaddress 192.168.1.1 subnet: 255.255.255.0 dns: 192.168.1.1 default gateway: 192.168.1.1 dhcp: yes

    Router 2 (vpn router)
    wan: pptp default gateway 192.168.1.1
    lan: ipaddress 192.168.2.1 subnet: 255.255.255.0 dns: 192.168.2.1 default gateway: 192.168.2.1 dhcp: yes
    (Laptops plugged in router2 does give 192.168.2.x. But ipchicken is still hawaii's address)

    Hi,

    To the users who have purchased a second router and purchased VPN subscriptions, do you think this method will work in the long term? I know $35 for a router and another $30 annual subscription is not a lot, but would be a big waste if this method stops working in the next month or something. By then you can't return the router and you're stuck with a VPN subscription that has no other use.

    Hi I did not know anything about router and it's too complicated for me. Is there any simple way to make my tvpad alive? I don't think all people who has tvpad know how to setup this second router. Please help.

    I purchased PureVpn for 2 years ($50.00) or about $2.00 a month. I plan on using it as a second router VPN. If all else fails, I will be using the VPN to stream Live Tvb to my iPad/iPhone using the TVB App. You can purchase an Hdmi adapted and hook it up to your TV. It's actually clearer than TVPAD stream. You can check out my post on how to do this. I would recommended PurePvn because they have about 8 dedicated Hong Kong servers. I tried the trial PIA VPN but kept on getting different countries even though I chose Hong Kong. I found they were using 3rd party servers. Whatever VPN you decide on, make sure they have dedicated Hong Kong servers.

    Yeah, basically, it's like you are virtually somewhere else as tvpad's servers will only see you are coming from the privateinternetaccess.com herein referred to as "PIA" while the connection from your tvpad to VPN, only you and PIA knows about.

    Good point about dedicated servers as PIA does state they have 3066 servers in 34 locations across 23 countries. The thing is, all the VPN's rent servers at colocation hosting centers as think of how much all those servers will cost, not to mention the bandwidth when everyone is actually using it. PIA is UK company and $2.00 a month seems to be below cost as the overhead alone is worth more than that. Maybe all these companies really oversell their bandwidth.

    If you have tvpad4 and 5.06 firmware, it will show the box it's restricted whenever you connected to PIA. It started two days ago.

    I guess tvpad official is watching this forum.

    Thank you for the step to get the TVB myTv app for my iphone and ipad. It is working great on live streaming.

    I am using PIA VPN on my second router, iphone and ipad. If I choose Hong Kong server in PIA, iphone and ipad work the way suppose to. No problem.

    The VPN can be used to watch myTV. You should also ask vpn's partial refund policy. You can resell your router in Ebay.

    I see no reason why they would do that.

    Nobody will know if it will work for long term. If you want something long time then subscribe to the official service.

    Anybody tried http://www.frostvpn.com/?
    They are running promotion for $9.99 per year and $19.99 for three years and they got a dedicated server in Hong Kong, very cheap and attractive. But does it work? Any experience?

    Subject: GOT THE VPN ROUTER TO WORK. THE SETTINGS ARE AS FOLLOWS
    At first, there was no wan pptp connection So I just have to change couple screenshots attach here. https://torguard.net/knowledgebase.php?action=displayarticle&id=97
    Then when I go to Status >> Wan >> then click the connect button, it shows pptp is connected.
    IT SEEMS IT IS A GOOD WAY FOR EVERYONE TO INSTALL DD-WRT ON THE ROUTER. WHY? BECAUSE IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT ROUTER MODEL AND BRAND YOU HAVE, BECAUSE WHEN YOU INSTALL DD-WRT ON ROUTER, THE GRAPHIC INTERFACE ALL LOOKS THE SAME, SO EVERYONE CONFIGURES THE SAME THING.

    The settings for the two routers are as follows.

    Router1 (primarily router)
    wan: dhcp
    lan: ipaddress 192.168.1.1 subnet: 255.255.255.0 dns: 192.168.1.1 default gateway: 192.168.1.1 dhcp: yes
    (Laptop plugged in router1 does give 192.168.1.x. And ipchicken gives a unitedstates ipaddress)

    Router 2 (vpn router)
    wan: pptp. dhcp is yes.
    lan: ipaddress 192.168.2.1 subnet: 255.255.255.0 dns: 192.168.2.1 default gateway: 192.168.2.1 dhcp: yes
    (Laptops plugged in router2 does give 192.168.2.x. And ipchicken does give Hong Kong's ipaddress)

    Everything working. Thank you. THANKS PADMAN FOR ALL YOUR REPLY AND POINTERS, because if it is not for you, I would not be able to continue further to the end.

    Letting everyone know that setting up this vpnrouter does work. I am very confident to say so, because if it does not work, you can post on this forum.

    you don't actually need HK servers. Any servers outside of US will work. I am using PIA with different servers, they all work.
