Benny/gqone76, thank you so much for your time. I have attached a few screenshots of my set of the router, VPN app on my laptop and keepsolid website which shows i have slots available. Anything glaring at you that is wrong? i have emailed their support for a log on, and i hope that will do it. I always thought the log on to the VPN service is the same as the L2TP log on. Perhaps ive mistaken. in the mean time, please see if you can spot anything wrong with my set up. I have changed the LAN IP to be different from my primary router (fios gateway). Thanks for your help as always.

The logon credential is same as that for the PC app, so you should be okay.

You can try changing the MTU to 1450 and the idle time should be changed to 0.

Regarding the servers address, I don't think they have changed, I never have to change mine. But I am using OpenVPN and not sure for L2TP.

    thanks again.

here is what i have available under the server tab from the laptop app for VPN unlimited. It does not include the web url but only the IP addy.

    thanks again all!

Team, KeepSolid said I can use the same UN and PW as i did when i first signed up for VPNunlimited.

I tried to change the MTU and idle time as suggested but i still get stuck at the connecting stage.

Can anyone be kind enough to share their set up on a TP LINK router?
I know it has to be in the config. Im already too invested in this to quit and nothing makes my parents more happy than getting this done for them.

Appreciate any help you guys can provide.

  • k, next is to verify that your second router is getting proper IP from main router, so intead of using l2tp, just connect and dhcp and connect your laptop to lan port to see if you can browse the internet if that's been verified. than change the setting to use L2TP and try using IP address and connect. sorry for the run around. just wanted to provide any assistance, but since I am using PIA not able to provide exact steps

No No, please do not apologize. I should be the one doing so for taking your time. I am not as tech savy esp with networking so your insights are much appreciated. I was going to PM you separately but thought i'd continue this thread as it may help others.

Here are the answers to your questions.
    1) VPN router is connected to internet (tested wired and wifi connection)
    2) VPN service is good as I used the windows app to connect to other servers and verified new IP from IP chicken. This is when my laptop is connected to VPN router
3)This is where i need some clarity: " than change the setting to use L2TP and try using IP address"
What IP address should i be using? The IP from the VPN service(virtual VPN) or some other IP.

I do apologize for the novice questions. I have zero knowledge on networking.

GQONE76, thank you so much. It is people like you, Benny, PADMAN that pay it forward that keeps this experience positive for everyone else in the TVPAD community.
  • FAQ on vpn unlimited is you can check the list of servers in vpn client app, if you open the app on your computer does it only list the country names? or URLs as well?
  • dsang23dsang23 Just Watchin`
Country name. It does not provide URL but it does provide virtual IP addy.

See screenshot a few post up.

  • ic. and since hk.vpnunlimitedapp.com still responds to ping guess that should of still worked. try other country other than hongkong to see if you can connect to that

I guess i have a few follow up questions.
On the VPNUnlimited app on my laptop, should i turn on the VPN? but doesnt this shut off once my laptop is powered down?

I will try other countriess when i get home tonight. Were there other router config you need to manually change before you got yours to work? From the youtube vids posted by padman it seems straight forward plug and play.

I dont why this is so difficult for me.

  • well I won't normaly use VPN app on laptop unless needed as some sites block IP's from VPN. app on your laptop will not have anything to do with VPN on any other device, upto 5 devcies that is allowed means they all work individualy.

video is straight forward and actual setting is straight forward, technically what you've done is correct and that's all you need to do, just make sure cables are connected to right places and try other country.

Don't feel bad, I was never able to connect via L2TP so I have to connect via OpenVPN.

    Benny, care to share? hahaha..
how difficult was that set up?

My router is flashed with Tomato firmware which is different from yours. You can check your router to see if it supports OpenVPN.

same i was never able to connect with l2tp. Currently using openvpn but with ddwrt. Do you know if there is a guide for tomato+open vpn + vpnunlimited?
  • If the router is flashed with Shibby's version of Tomato firmware http://tomato.groov.pl/?page_id=164, configuring the OpenVPN client is quite straight forward. Just key the proper credentials and keys according to the OpenVPN profile supplied by VPNunlimited. If you can do it with DD-WRT then you shouldn't have problem with Tomato.

Concerning the L2TP client, I understand that there is a secret key to be entered but I don't see anywhere to enter it in the Tomato firmware. I Googled and found a way to do it but it was too complicated so I gave up and stick with OpenVPN for now.

-configure the TP LINK to L2TP with VPN Unlimited credentials (user name and pw) but unit does not connect. I only get the connecting message.
