New to IPTV boxes

I am just getting into this IPTV box thing. I can't understand why some boxes like A2 and UBOX are costing C$220 and C$190 when there are IPTV boxes costing in the C$70-90 range? What is the difference? Can I not just buy the cheap box and simply install the Chinese TV apps myself?

You can just buy cheap $35 box and subscribe to TVChina, Napper or 华悦汇.

There are a couple of existing posts dotted around the forum suggesting which generic android boxes are best. General opinion seems to be S905/S905x SoC with android 5.1/6.0 is best for compatibility. If you plan to use KODI 17, it requires android 5 as a minimum. Stay clear of android 7 for now.

I read somewhere that Xiaomi box is good for Kodi. It is brand name so I would think the box quality is better than other generic box.

get a box that is rooted. install china tunnel from google store. it can play many chinese apps without geoblock. i just bought 3 more mccool m8s pro android 7.1 from ebay for my relatives. it's already rooted and faster than most android boxes.

@tylerlee Thanks a lot. If you can provide some instructions on what to install to get it to work and what are the best apps to use. I just need to watch live TV from China and Taiwan, shows from these 2 countries and bonus if I can get Canadian and US channels.

I bought a xiaomi box few years ago and regret buying it. The firmware is limited what you can do. Like tylerlee said, get something that can be rooted.

I just ordered a mecool m8s pro as tylerlee suggested. Looks like a great unit with good spec and cheap.

I know on the $220 A2 box they have 非凡電視 and 鲜橘. These two are the major apps for that box. Are these apps available anywhere?
